Peddling trash: beating poverty with bikes in Kenya

Worldbike is using customised bicycles to kick-start rubbish-hauling enterprises in Kenya's poorest neighbourhoods. Daily quantities are sold for daily needs in Nairobi's ever-growing slums. Called the kidogo economy, Swahili for 'little', laundry detergent, margarine and anything else manufacturers haven't packaged in small boxes are divided and resold in tiny affordable sachets.

Africa faces a double burden of obesity and hunger as millions take up increasingly sedentary lives in cities and the global financial crisis hits rural populations’ food security, nutritionists warn. Under-nutrition continues to plague sub-Saharan Africa, where 32 percent of the world's hungry people live. However, those migrating from the countryside to cities are eating too much fatty food, leading to rising rates of obesity.

The African Union (AU) is expected to adopt a ground-breaking convention this week to protect and assist millions of internally displaced people on the continent. Africa hosts almost half of the world's internally displaced people (IDPs) - 11.8 million of an estimated 26 million - who have been uprooted within their own countries because of conflict and natural disasters.

Visionary leadership is key to Africa's progress, and there are effective ways of encouraging it. Once when flying over Kenya I looked out of my window. The country was so lush, so green, I wondered how the people there could ever be hungry. Looking at the spaces, huge, endless spaces, animals, water; everything was there. I came to the conclusion that unless you are ruled properly, you cannot move forward. Everything else is second. Everything.

It costs so little to scrap healthcare fees in poor countries that donors and governments have no excuse for letting millions die every year due to charges they can't pay, a joint report by major charities said on Monday. "User fees for healthcare are a life or death issue for millions of people in poor countries. Too poor to pay, women and children are paying with their lives," said the report.

Two hugely ambitious power-generating schemes have been launched in recent weeks, one offering to create the world's largest solar farm and the other to create the biggest hydroelectric dam on the planet. In both cases the location for the mega-projects is Africa…What the two projects have in common is that they seek to export the majority of the power they intend to generate from impoverished countries to more developed economies.

Zimbabwe inflation quickens, crisis persists
